We have always been great admirers of Roy Weatherby. He has done so much for the industry. The 378 Weatherby case is the parent to many calibers. We have decided to offer 2 of them in heavy stocks and custom chassis. 30-378 WBY and 338-378 WBY.
Initial testing for the Mountain Thumper XL proved a problem we address on the Norma page. The big Weatherbys have so much capacity that they serve no advantage over the Normas in 19" barrels. It wasn't until a 28" barrel and longer COALs were used to get the Weatherbys to be more than 100 FPS faster than the Normas. The Normas tapped out with massive compressed loads and there was nothing that could be done.
Performance with Ultra High BC bullets will be 3150 FPS for the 30-378 when using 220gr bullets. 2975 FPS for the 338-378 using 300gr bullets. There are a few 30 cal silencers capable of handling the 30-378. For the 338-378, A Surefire is the best choice.
Invites have been sent to us for a couple shoots in Texas next year. Yes 2022, and we are already planning for it. The 7-300 NMI is more than capable of stretching it's legs at 2000 yards but we do have slight reservations of the atmosphere playing tricks. Sending a 300gr Ultra High BC bullet out of the 338-378 WBY will be the ultimate choice aside from going to an ELR Length Actions. < Got something on the project board.
The other reason for these 2, we just like them! Over the past few months during all of the issues with supply and demand, we have been able to talk with Weatherby to ensure brass will be available later this year so we won't always have to use CNC brass. We leave the choice up to the client though.
Tooling is ordered as well as die sets.
